BERLIN – The German parliament passed a historic dual citizenship reform on Friday. With this, Germany has accepted dual citizenship. It also decided to make the citizenship process easier and naturalized for non-EU citizens.

MPs from all parties in Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s tripartite coalition, the Social Democrats (SPD), Greens, Free Democrats (FDP) and the opposition Christian Democrats (CDU) and Christian Social Union (CSU), voted in favor of the law, but the far-right Alternative for Germany voted against the bill. .

Out of a total of 639 votes, 382 MPs voted in favor of the bill, 243 MPs voted against it and 23 MPs abstained. Under the new citizenship scheme changes, immigrants legally living in Germany will be able to apply for citizenship after five years instead of the current eight. However, this will be reduced to just three years if they are placed on the government’s list for meritorious, charitable and organizational work. Also, children born in Germany automatically acquire German citizenship if one of the parents has been a legal resident of the country for five or more years.

For immigrants over the age of 67, an oral test is sufficient instead of a written German language test. Although Germany allows multiple citizenships, the law does not apply to Indians in Germany unless the Indian government allows it.

German citizenship will be denied to those who have committed racial hatred or other reprehensible crimes.
