Update from Sunday, July 9, 7:02 p.m.: The hot Sunday gave Germany a new temperature record: with more than 37 degrees, it was the hottest day of 2023 so far. According to a meteorologist from the German Weather Service (DWD), 37.2 degrees Celsius were measured in Neckarwestheim on Sunday afternoon. And that was probably only a temporary peak value, because experience has shown that the temperatures only reach their highest value in the late afternoon and are not announced as preliminary peak values ​​until the evening of one day at the earliest.

In other parts of Germany it was 35 degrees and hotter on Sunday, according to the DWD in Bavaria, for example, 35.3 degrees were measured in Kitzingen in Lower Franconia. According to preliminary DWD information, it was up to 35.7 degrees hot on Saturday. This maximum temperature was measured in Tönisvorst (North Rhine-Westphalia). It was that warm on June 22nd in Reit im Winkl in Upper Bavaria.

The German temperature record is still a long way from all these values. According to the DWD, 41.2 degrees Celsius were measured on July 25, 2019 at the stations in Duisburg and Tönisvorst. Last year, for example, 40.1 degrees were recorded on July 20 in Hamburg-Neuwiedenthal.

Weather on Sunday: First peak values ​​announced

Although no record temperatures have been set so far, the highest value measured nationwide at a DWD weather station is already 35.7 degrees according to preliminary data. This was measured in Tönisvorst in North Rhine-Westphalia.

It is also particularly hot in Duisburg-Baerl (NRW), Weilerswist (NRW), Saarbrücken-Burbach (Saarland), Kitzingen (Bavaria) and Andernach (Rhineland-Palatinate) with around 35 degrees. According to the German Weather Service, it is likely to get even warmer. Locally up to 38 degrees were predicted for Sunday, in coastal areas up to 27 degrees. In northern parts of Saxony, the highest level of forest fire danger was declared, in Berlin there is an increased number of operations due to the heat.

Weather on Sunday: DWD warns of heat with severe thermal stress

In almost all of Germany, the alarm level is “Purple”. That means: The DWD warns of the heat in many regions with a strong heat load. In coastal regions and in the south of Bavaria, the temperatures are somewhat milder. The maximum temperatures are between 28 and 35 degrees, sometimes even more. This could be particularly dangerous for older people, children and people with previous illnesses. The DWD therefore advises drinking enough and keeping your own four walls cool if possible.

Hot summer in Germany: 30-degree mark in many places already cracked at noon

Meanwhile, the Federal Ministry of Health issued a warning about the risks of high temperatures. According to the ministry, people with previous health conditions, the elderly and parents with small children in particular should not underestimate the risk of high temperatures. It is strongly recommended to drink enough fluids. Physical exertion should be avoided, especially during lunchtime and in the early afternoon. In addition, it is advised to use sunscreen and preferably to stay in the shade.

Heat at the weekend: High temperatures and severe weather, especially in the southwest

Summer weather with temperatures between 26 and 29 degrees is expected in the north and east on Friday. The German weather service published a heat warning for western and southwestern Germany on Friday morning – it should be even warmer on Saturday. The temperatures will climb to over 30 degrees in almost all of Germany, while it will be around 27 degrees on the coasts. In the south, for example in Bavaria, and along the Rhine, temperatures of 34 to almost 36 degrees are expected.

Heat weather in Germany: Up to 39 degrees are possible

In the west and southwest, the humidity is expected to increase during the day – the first heat thunderstorms threaten in the evening. On Sunday it will also be humid in the western half of the country. Temperatures of 35 to 37 degrees are possible. Hot weekend in Germany: Better to stay indoors when the temperatures are high

It is advisable to prepare well for this hot weather. Adequate fluid intake is very important. Jung recommends staying indoors and not outdoors when temperatures are high. It is recommended to keep the windows closed and turn on fans or air conditioners to keep the room temperature low.
