Germany: Factory orders rise more than expected in January

German industrial orders rose more than expected in January, supported by strong foreign demand, official statistics showed on Monday.

Factory orders rose 1.8% in January seasonally adjusted following rising 3% (revised upwards) in December, according to data from the Federal Statistical Office.

Retail sales in Germany, also released on Monday, for their part partially recovered in January following a (revised) 4.6% fall in December, despite the health restrictions still in force that month to counter the wave. infections linked to the Omicron variant of the coronavirus.

Retail sales in Germany rose 2% over the month in real terms, while economists polled by Archyde.com had forecast a 1.8% rise.
