MANILA (AP) — Germany became basketball World Cup champions for the first time on Sunday, beating Serbia 83-77 in the final on Sunday.

Dennis Schroder led the German offense with 28 points, while Franz Wagner added 19.

Germany completed a perfect 8-0 run in the tournament, becoming the fifth successive team to become undefeated champion. Previously, the Germans’ best result at the world championships was the bronze medal in Indianapolis 2002.

The victory in the Philippines caps a glorious summer for German basketball. Dirk Nowitzki was inducted into the Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Aleksa Avramovic scored 21 points and Bogdan Bogdanovic added 17 for Serbia (6-2), which lost a final for the second time in the last three editions. They were beaten 129-92 against the United States in the 2014 title match. Not much was expected of them due to the absence of Nikola Jokic, their star who had just won the NBA championship with the Denver Nuggets. Jokic decided to take a break for next season.

A 22-10 run in the third quarter gave Germany enough of a lead after a back-and-forth first half.
