Giant Crocodylians Ruled Miocene South America’s Food Chain

Long before modern caimans patrolled the rivers of the Amazon, a seven-metre-long, 1,800-kilogram relative ruled the wetlands of Miocene South America. Between 10.5 and 16 million years ago, Purussaurus neivensis dominated a vast tropical lake ecosystem, preying on massive herbivores weighing over a tonne. Fossil evidence analyzed by researchers, including University of Helsinki postdoctoral researcher Wilson, reveals how this giant predator was an important predator in the ancient food web.

A Continental Wetland Crucible

More than ten million years ago, South America looked radically different than it does today. A sprawling, massive lake covered much of the continent, home to some of the most bizarre and gigantic fauna in evolutionary history. Giant turtles, anacondas, saber-toothed mammals, flightless terror birds, and sebecids—which were terrestrial relatives of crocodylians—all lived along the shores of this ancient wetland. Yet, new fossil evidence indicates that crocodylians were the most significant group of predators in this habitat.

The sheer scale of the ecosystem’s productivity meant that mammalian predators simply could not consume the available biomass. Wilson notes from the research that crocodylians emerged as the most significant group of predators in this specific habitat, particularly when targeting large-scale prey. The shores teemed with a diverse assortment of herbivores, including giant ground sloths, armadillo-relative glyptodonts, and various ungulates like astrapotheres (lightning beasts) and toxodontids. Many of these ungulates exceeded a metric ton in body weight.

Reading Puncture Wounds in Museum Collections

Paleontologists cannot observe these ancient predator-prey dynamics in real time. Instead, researchers rely on physical clues preserved in museum collections containing fossils dating back 10.5 to 16 million years. Direct evidence of interspecies interactions exists in the form of bite traces and tooth marks left behind on herbivore fossils.

By analyzing these marks, evolutionary biologists reconstruct ancient trophic webs. The frequency of bite marks likely made by Purussaurus neivensis confirms its status as an important predator of the Miocene tropical ecosystem. As a 23-foot reptile, it may even have influenced the size of herbivore populations.

Reassessing Cold-Blooded Dominance

The latest findings, published according to university and institutional studies, indicate that crocodylians were the region’s most important predators, especially when it came to hunting large prey. While terror birds and saber-toothed mammals were present, the physical size of Purussaurus neivensis positioned it at the top of the food chain. The research provides a reassessment of how cold-blooded giants functioned in tropical biomes alongside endothermic rivals.
