Giants Offense Wins Final Practice Drill After Lobbying Harbaugh

New York Giants coach John Harbaugh called the grueling week of practice in West Virginia a defining stretch of training camp. Capped by a hard-fought 14-play goal-line drill on Friday, the team balanced a stifling defense with a sharp passing attack before returning to New Jersey.

With a punishing five-day block of four padded practices drawing to a close in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, the Giants wrapped up their final full-scale preparations before heading back east to East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Defensive Dominance and the Trench Battle

The defining identity of a Harbaugh-led squad quickly emerged in the West Virginia heat as the defense consistently stonewalled the running game. Throughout Friday’s session, first-, second-, and third-unit offenses tried repeatedly to establish a ground game, only to be turned away at every turn. That success offers a promising shift for a defensive unit that struggled significantly against the run during recent seasons.

Rookie linebacker Arvell Reese pointed to sheer determination as the driving force behind the defensive line’s dominance in the trenches, explaining it’s just a want to do it alongside physical capability.

Meanwhile, second-year edge defender Abdul Carter proved to be a constant disruption in the backfield. Carter delivered a standout performance by logging a sack and a pressure against Andrew Thomas early in practice, while also blowing up a rushing play for a loss while matching up against right tackle Jermaine Eluemunor.

Passing Attack Finds Rhythm Under Pressure

While the run game faced consistent resistance, the passing attack clicked into a high-octane rhythm all afternoon. Quarterback Jaxson Dart shook off a slow start—opening with two incompletions on his first three throws—to orchestrate an efficient passing game alongside Jameis Winston.

Harbaugh praised Dart’s composure when facing an aggressive defense deploying heavy pressure and exotic blitzes. He did. I mean, and he made some good throws. He got us in some good plays, Harbaugh said, adding that All three quarterbacks got to some plays versus pressure, which was, that’s great. It’s good to see.

Wide receivers Calvin Austin and Dalen Cambre made the most of their repetitions. Cambre caught a hitch route and spun away from cornerback Colton Hood for a highlight-reel reception, while Austin used his explosive speed to routinely create separation against both Hood and Paulson Adebo during one-on-one drills.

On the kicking front, Ben Sauls and Dominic Zvada shared kicking duties for what appeared to be the first time in camp. Sauls connected on 6 of 7 attempts—including makes from 50, 51, and 55 yards—with his sole miss coming from 45 yards following a high snap. Zvada also went 6 of 7, hitting from 48 and 51 yards before missing wide right from 55 yards.

Goal-Line Standoff Ends Practice on Offensive Terms

Practice concluded with an intense, full-field drill starting at the offense’s 1-yard line. The grueling 14-play session marked the longest stretch the first-team units spent on the field during camp and featured a rare water break called midway through the action.

When the scripted 13th play brought the offense to the 3-yard line—marking the intended end of the drill—the players refused to let the session close without a score. Coach [was] calling the second-unit players onto the field.

“We wanted it. We wanted it, because Harbs was trying to save us. He didn’t want goal-line stuff, but we wanted it. That shows you how tough and what the mentality of the team is. We were right there by the goal line. We want to finish. Coach [was] calling the twos in. We’re like, ‘What the hell’?”

Relenting to the energetic lobbying from his players, Harbaugh granted the final play to satisfy the competitive drive of a roster preparing for the regular season.

Following Saturday’s final practice in West Virginia, the team traveled back to East Rutherford, New Jersey. After taking Sunday off, the Giants resume workouts on Monday at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center.
