According to the latest figures from the specialized site, three to four gifts have been resold every minute since Monday morning and 300,000 new announcements of second-hand items put up for sale are expected throughout the day.
Some didn’t waste any time. While the first gift packages were opened on Sunday evening, December 24 or this Monday morning, the eBay site indicates that it has already recorded three to four gifts resold every minute since this morning. The platform expects to record the publication of some 300,000 new advertisements for second-hand items put up for sale by individuals this Christmas Day with a first resale peak at the end of the day, between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m.
This number should double tomorrow during which a peak in ads posted online will occur after 5 p.m. The one million new listings mark is expected to be crossed by December 28. In total, eBay expects as many as three million new listings to be posted by individual sellers on its site between now and January 3.
Nearly 50 euros hoped for thanks to these resales
According to the latest eBay/Kantar barometer of the resale of Christmas gifts, nearly one in four French people (23%) planned to resell their gifts this year compared to 17% in 2022. Before the pandemic, this percentage oscillated between 10 and 15 %. “This year for the first time, the French are reselling more to pay Christmas bills (30% are considering it) than to give themselves a gift they like (29% of French people),” recalls eBay in a press release published this Monday. Still according to the specialized site, the French hope to earn nearly 50 euros on average from these gift resales.
The first resale trends observed show a predominance of the latest consoles and the latest video game releases. With particularly popular franchises, like the traditional Pokémon and Mario but also Barbie, whose film adaptation was one of the biggest successes of the year. Furthermore, books having obtained the latest literary awards, whether the Médicis or Goncourt prizes, have an important place among the new advertisements because they have often been offered in duplicate, according to eBay.
