Inti Create, which produced Girl Gun and Bloodstained, unveiled a new novel at the ‘Beat Summit’, an indie game event in Japan held on the 6th. “Grim Guardians: Demon Purge” is a 2D side-scrolling action new work about the purification of the demonic nature of the Kimizono sisters who appeared as exorcists and heroines in Girl Gun Double Piece.
Grim Guardians follows the journey of demon hunter sisters who struggle to restore a school that has been turned into a devil’s castle. Her older sister ‘Kamizono Shinobu’ is good at shooting ranged attacks, and her younger sister ‘Kamizono Maya’ has secondary abilities using melee attacks and origami. You can fold a giant crane and jump over it to a distant place, or fold a paper doll and wrap it around it like a shield.
Players take turns using sister characters with different characteristics in the right place to eliminate demons. A demon with a shield that deflects bullets attacks with her younger sister or, on the contrary, shoots enemies from a distance with her sister’s long-range attack. In this way, you can see why the school has turned into a devil’s castle and what happened to the students by eradicating the devil.
In addition, Grim Guardians supports two-player cooperative play. Two people can play one character at the same time, and it is also possible to jump to a high place by stepping on each other’s heads. There are also elements that can help each other, such as resurrecting a dead player or transforming into a mask and hanging on to another character. At the same time, players can enjoy a ‘style system’ in which the player directly selects the difficulty level, and play that varies depending on the number of plays.
The interesting part is that the demon hunter sisters, the main characters of this work, appeared as heroines in another title of Intie Creates, Gal Gun Double Piece. The sisters also worked as exorcists in Girl Gun Double Piece, and it can be confirmed that they have the same name and appearance. The concept of an older sister who uses a gun and a younger brother who uses a paper folding shikigami also coincide, and the mask Maya wears in Picture Guardians looks just like the double piece she hangs on. However, the relationship between the two games has not been officially mentioned.
Grim Guardians: Demon Purge will be released on PC (Steam), PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch.
