This Monday, May 8, stage 3 of the Giro d’Italia took place, a mostly flat day that included two mountain passes; Monticchio (6.3 km at 6.4% on average) and Valico La Croce (2.6 km at 7.6%). Fortunately, for the sprinters, these prizes were too far from the finish line.

On the way to southern Italy, this new exit had 216 kilometers between Vasto and Melfi, a route in which the first 170 kilometers were completely flat until reaching the Vulture Mountains, where they completed the ascent to Valico dei Laghi di Monticchio, a section in which faced slopes between 6 and 7%.

Once the climb to Valico La Croce was over, the riders descended to the straight that led to the finish line in Melfi, where once again the sprint was the protagonist.

In this race, a Colombian cyclist was the protagonist when crossing in second place in one of the mountain passes. On the ascent to Valico dei Laghi di Monticchio, Santiago Buitrago (Bahrain Victorious) got behind Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ) to add four points in the mountain classification.

In the end, thinking about the team’s strategy, Buitrago gave up space and fell behind to give way to the group of 80 cyclists who would reach the last kilometers together. In the end, the Bogotá cyclist crossed the finish line in 43rd place and 38th in the general classification.

The best Colombian of the Giro d’Italia 2023 so far is Rigoberto Urán, who climbed 10 places in the general and was in box 34 at 1:47 behind the leader Remco Evenepoel. This Monday, the Antioquia cyclist entered the 40th place of stage 3.
