A major fire in Glasgow, Scotland, has crippled Scottish train services and destroyed a historic building near the city’s central station. The blaze, which began Sunday afternoon, caused significant damage and forced the closure of Glasgow Central Station, Scotland’s busiest railway hub, with disruptions expected to continue through Tuesday.
The fire erupted in a vape shop on Union Street, adjacent to the station, and quickly spread, engulfing the four-story building in flames. The structure, dating back to 1851, partially collapsed overnight, leaving only the facade standing, according to reports. The incident has prompted a large-scale emergency response and raised concerns about the structural integrity of surrounding buildings.
Firefighters Battle Extensive Blaze
More than 60 firefighters and 15 vehicles were deployed to combat the blaze, with crews continuing to work at the scene as of Monday morning, according to the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service. Firefighters were first alerted to the fire at approximately 3:46 PM on Sunday, March 8th. Despite their efforts, the building was largely destroyed.
Scottish Parliament member Paul Sweeney described the scene as reminiscent of the Blitz, the sustained strategic bombing of Britain during World War II. “It’s been completely wiped out, destroyed,” Sweeney told the BBC. “The building is a gutted shell. It looks like something out of the Blitz.”
Train Services Halted, Travel Disrupted
Glasgow Central Station remains closed, and all train services to, from, and through the station have been cancelled. National Rail has stated there is currently no estimate for when the station will reopen, but disruptions are expected to last at least through the end of Monday. Passengers are advised to check with their train operator for the latest travel information.
The disruption impacts a significant portion of Scotland’s rail network, affecting both commuter and long-distance services. ScotRail offers a PLUSBUS ticket option for discounted unlimited bus travel within Glasgow as an alternative for commuters, according to ScotRail.
Businesses Affected, Community Impact
Several businesses located within the affected building were also destroyed by the fire, including a café, a fish and chip shop, and a hair salon. Sexy Coffee, one of the businesses impacted, shared on Instagram that they were “absolutely devastated” but vowed to rebuild.
Scotland’s First Minister John Swinney expressed relief that no injuries were reported but acknowledged the “enormous” damage and the significant disruption the fire will cause. He stated that the government would provide financial support to aid in the city’s recovery.
Residents near the station expressed shock and sadness at the destruction. “It’s just so sad,” said Emma Reid, a local resident, reflecting the sentiment of many in the community. “It’s such an iconic building.”
Looking Ahead
Authorities are continuing to assess the extent of the damage to Glasgow Central Station and surrounding infrastructure. The focus remains on ensuring the safety of the area and restoring rail services as quickly as possible. The long-term impact on businesses and the local community is still being evaluated. As investigations continue, further details regarding the cause of the fire and the timeline for repairs are expected to emerge.
