Oliver Glasner gave Jürgen Klopp a real setback on his farewell tour in Liverpool. Glasner’s Crystal Palace team won 1-0 in the Premier League on Sunday in the first duel between the two football coaches against title contenders. Arsenal also slipped into a home defeat, the Londoners lost 2-0 to Aston Villa. This means that champions Manchester City (73 points) are now in pole position as league leaders, Arsenal and Liverpool have two points less.

Liverpool recently lost the league lead to Arsenal with a 2-2 draw at Manchester United. After the 3-0 defeat in the quarter-final first leg of the Europa League against Atalanta Bergamo, they suffered another bitter home defeat. The golden goal for Crystal Palace was scored by Eberechi Eze (14th), who was completely free after a pass from Michael Olise. A little later, Liverpool’s Andy Robertson prevented the score from making it 2-0 by clearing a shot from the rushing Jean-Philippe Mateta off the line (18′).

Liverpool recorded a shot on the crossbar through Wataru Endo (27th). Curtis Jones missed the Reds’ best chance in a counterattack after the break (75′). On the other hand, Alisson, who returned to the Liverpool goal after a long injury break, saved Mateta with a brilliant effort from point-blank range (74′).

Crystal Palace celebrated their first success against Liverpool since 2017 or 13 failed attempts. “This is an outstanding win at Anfield, it’s so difficult to win here,” said Glasner. “The way they played, especially in the first half, was very nice to see,” he praised his team.

For Glasner it was his second complete success as a coach in England after a 3-0 win on his debut against Burnley at the end of February. Since then there have been two draws and three defeats under the Upper Austrian. With the coup in Liverpool, the Londoners increased their lead over the relegation zone to eight points with five rounds to go. They also played one less game.

The match day also ended bitterly for another title candidate. Arsenal had to admit defeat to fourth-placed Aston Villa thanks to two late goals from Leon Bailey (84th) and Ollie Watkins (87th). The big round winner is defending champion City, coach Pep Guardiola’s team defeated Luton Town 5-1 on Saturday. While the “Skyblues” were in third place before the match day, the “Gunners” and the “Reds” now have to hope that Erling Haaland and Co. slip up.
