BOSTON — Aaron Judge went without a homer, but Gleyber Torres had it some way as the New York Yankees beat the Boston Red Sox 5-3 on Wednesday to complete a two-game series sweep.
A day earlier, Judge had hit two homers to reach 57 for the season — four shy of the American League record set by Roger Maris.
This time, he went 4-1 with a walk. He singled in the fifth after Aaron Hicks reached on an error, leaving runners on first and second.
Torres singled to right field, and Alex Verdugo’s throw to the plate was late to retire Hicks. Catcher Connor Wong thought Torres had gotten too far off the bag and threw to first.
But he did it wide, and the ball went into the garden. Judge scored and Torres beat Verdugo’s second throw to the plate to put New York ahead 3-0. The Venezuelan added three hits and Cuban Néstor Cortés (10-4) led a shutout until the fifth inning as the Yankees won their fourth game in a row and their eighth of the last 10.
Dominican rookie Brayan Bello (1-6) took the loss even though all three of the runs he allowed were unearned. He struck out six, walked one and gave up six hits in five innings.
For the Yankees, the Venezuelans Torres 5-3 with one run scored and one produced, Oswaldo Cabrera 5-1, Marwin González 3-0.
For the Red Sox, the Mexican Verdugo 3-0. The Dominicans Rafael Devers 4-1 with an RBI, Abraham Almonte 2-1 with a run scored. Puerto Rican Kiké Hernández 4-0 with an RBI.
