Abu Dhabi/Dubai ∙ Foreigners dressed in kasav sari, dawani, jubba and mund made the Malayalees’ Onam celebration global. People from different countries working in the UAE came wearing Kerala clothes to express their solidarity with the Malayalis. Some of them caught wind of the matter when the company owner was surprised to see all the employees dressed in new clothes instead of their executive roles and wished them a happy Onam. Some other company owners shocked the employees by ordering Onam Sadya in the afternoon and eating with the employees.

Indians are the largest expatriate community in the UAE (more than 35 lakhs) despite working from various nationalities. More than half of them are Keralites. As there are few establishments without Malayali employees, there were ripples of Onam celebrations in most of the establishments. They were excited to arrange flowers and perform art shows.
Apart from Indians, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Ghana, Philippines, Egypt and Nepal also participated in the celebration at Delta Printing Press in Dubai National Industries Park. Foreign women were excited to wear Kasavu sarees and set sarees for the first time in their lives. Pakistan’s Maveli, Sri Lanka’s Vamana and Filipino Thiruvathira were the focus of the Onam celebrations held here a few years ago.

Abu Dhabi Ali Al Jalaf Advocates and Legal Consultancy Office also participated in the Onam celebrations from UAE, Egypt, Jordan and Philippines. 31 nationalities participated in the UAE’s first Onam celebration held at Burjeel Medical City. Thiruvonam, which falls on a working day, is celebrated grandly by expatriates on weekends. Depending on the availability of the auditorium, the Onam celebrations will last for several months. There are even those who celebrate Onam, Christmas and New Year together. Therefore, the presence of foreigners will be evident till the last Onam celebration.
