Global Diabetes Statistics 2021: Rising Prevalence, High Obesity-Related Risks

For 2021 they are assuming 529 million diabetics worldwide – in 2010 there were still 326 million. The most recent average prevalence was 6.1 percent of the population. The highest rates are found in North Africa and the Middle East (9.3 percent) and Oceania (12.3 percent). 96 percent of the cases were due to type 2 diabetes. Obesity is the biggest risk factor, the influence of which has increased significantly over the past 30 years.
