Global health institutions consider that obesity is not just an emergency phenomenon, but rather that it constitutes a global epidemic.

According to the World Atlas website, which specializes in statistics, the extreme abundance of food resources quickly became a curse, and reliance on cheap sugars and fats increased to become staples of food all over the world, but it caused societal devastation in a certain corner of the planet.

The website published a list of the countries most suffering from the obesity epidemic, and it was surprising that Egypt ranked 19th in a list that included 171 countries.

Kuwait, Qatar, and Libya also occupied advanced positions on this list.

Pacific Island countries currently rank in the top five in prevalence of high BMI, and island countries occupy more than half of the top 20 countries, in terms of percentage of adults who are obese.

It is scientifically proven that high body mass index rates often lead to the spread of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and shortened lifespan.

What is body mass index?

Body mass index, also known as BMI, is a simple way to measure a person’s body weight in relation to their height. To calculate it, you divide a person’s weight in kilograms by the square of his height in meters.

This method is often used in studies to estimate obesity rates in large groups of people because it is easy to calculate and non-invasive.

In general, a healthy BMI ranges from 18.5 to 24.9; Being over or under means you are underweight or overweight, and obesity starts at 30.0.

However, BMI is not a perfect measure. One major drawback is that it is not possible to distinguish between muscle and fat. This means that a person with large muscles may be classified as overweight according to their BMI, even if they are actually in great shape. The BMI also does not take into account where body fat is located, which may affect health risks.

Despite these limitations, BMI remains useful as a general guide for assessing weight at the population level. It is a suitable tool for large groups, making it practical for studies.
