After a year out of competition, athlete Honorato Pungo, from Gloriosos FC, won, on Sunday, in the city of Lubango, the Provincial Individual Absolute Chess Championship, by accumulating seven points, from the same number of rounds played, in a competition with the participation of more than 20 players.

The competition took place in one of the educational institutions in the city of Lubango, at the hands of the Provincial Chess Association (APX) of Huíla and included athletes from Benfica do Lubango, Glorioso FC, Ferroviário and Desportivo da Huíla, as well as the Barazoqui and Brazone.

In second and third place were David Osvaldo with 5.5 points, from Ferroviário da Huíla and António Jamba with five points, from Benfica do Lubango.

Speaking to the press, Honorato Pungo gave a positive note to the organization of the race. He said he had the most difficult game against José Miguel, a chess veteran, who, at a certain point in the game, had a lost position and felt defeat close at hand, but his opponent made some inaccuracies, which reversed the disadvantage.

“If the champion from the previous edition played, the championship would be even more competitive, but I believe they would also have a chance of winning.

I will be active this year, participating in all competitions and representing Huíla in the best possible way at the National Championship”, he stated.

In turn, the vice-president of APX/Huíla, Brachegues Chaves, made a positive assessment of the event, considering the number of participants, with an acceptable playing strength, despite there being only one girl, which demonstrates the need for encourage more gender in the practice of the sport.
