Clinical Trials Targeting Alcohol Use and Liver Disease
In the United Kingdom, researchers are launching a clinical trial to explore whether semaglutide—marketed as Wegovy—can help patients affected by alcohol dependency, obesity, and liver disease. As reported by Lboro, alcohol use is a leading cause of death in the UK and its main cause of liver disease, with about half of those living with alcohol-related liver disease also being obese.

Starting in September 2026, the CURB trial will recruit 268 participants with alcohol dependence, obesity, and chronic liver disease across England, Wales, and Scotland. Over 36 weeks, participants will receive either semaglutide or a dummy treatment to assess whether the drug can reduce alcohol consumption and improve weight, liver health, and quality of life.
