God of War Ragnarök has generated 1.4 billion US dollars in revenue since its launch in November 2022, making it the highest-grossing PlayStation game of the current generation, dailygame.at reported. The action-adventure title, developed by Santa Monica Studio, has outperformed newer releases like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and Gran Turismo 7, demonstrating remarkable staying power in the market.
Ragnarök’s Four-Year Reign
The data, from market analyst Rhys Elliott at Alinea Analytics, shows that despite being released four years ago, the game continues to drive significant sales. In 2026 alone, an estimated 1.1 million copies were sold, generating approximately 60 million dollars. This performance places Ragnarök ahead of more recent titles such as SAROS and Gears of War: E-Day in annual revenue.
Of the 21.6 million total units sold, 20.1 million were on PlayStation platforms, with the remaining 1.6 million on Steam. On PlayStation, 75 percent of sales were on the PS5, showing the console’s dominance for new releases.
The PlayStation Plus Paradox
God of War Ragnarök’s availability on PlayStation Plus Extra, a subscription service with an estimated 6.7 million users, has not cannibalized its sales. Analyst Elliott explicitly separates subscription usage from direct game purchases, noting that the game’s commercial success has continued despite its inclusion in the service.
Why Spider-Man 2 Trails Behind
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, another flagship PlayStation title, has generated 1.3 billion dollars in revenue from 19.1 million units sold. While a massive success, it trails Ragnarök by 100 million dollars. The difference stems from release timing and platform strategy.
Ragnarök launched on both PS4 and PS5 in November 2022, giving it a year-long head start over Spider-Man 2, which debuted exclusively on PS5 in October 2023. The staggered release of Spider-Man 2’s PC version further affected its cumulative revenue compared to Ragnarök’s simultaneous multi-platform approach.
The Series’ Future on Prime Video
The commercial success of the games has heightened anticipation for the upcoming God of War series on Prime Video, starring Dave Bautista. Analyst Elliott expressed optimism about the show’s potential, predicting it could surpass Amazon’s Fallout series in performance. This projection is based on the strength of the game franchise rather than guaranteed results, as Elliott noted that video game adaptations depend heavily on execution.
“The success of Ragnarök shows there’s deep global appetite for this IP, but translating that to television requires a faithful and compelling adaptation,” Elliott said of the series prospects.
Sony’s upcoming title, God of War Laufey, is now scheduled for release on May 20, 2027, after a recent delay. The continued success of the Ragnarök title provides a strong foundation for the franchise’s expansion into new media.
