Going Green: Installing Solar Panels on Every Roof in Switzerland – The Ultimate Guide

2023-08-13 14:29:48

The Greens want to launch a popular initiative to install solar panels on every roof in Switzerland, reports Le Matin Dimanche. The text has been validated by the party leadership and will be voted on in assembly on August 26.

For the ecologist party, the potential of Switzerland in terms of solar energy is enormous. But before creating gigantic alpine parks, which would have an impact on the environment, its management believes that it is necessary to exploit the buildings already constructed.

The text of the initiative thus wants to make the production of renewable energy compulsory on “the appropriate surfaces of constructions or installations”, such as roofs, facades and other noise barriers, unless it comes up against “protection interests”, i.e. historic or protected buildings.

For all new constructions or renovations, the obligation would come into force the year following the vote. For existing buildings, a period of fifteen years is provided, and may be postponed to 2050 in certain cases. “The idea is to support the owners”, underlines the Geneva green deputy Delphine Klopfenstein Broggini in the Sunday newspaper.

The benefits of decentralization

According to her, the initiative would make it possible to return to a “neighborhood logic” in energy production and thus to gain in security. Finally, she recalls that, according to a poll published at the end of May, “97% of the population is in favor of solar installations on roofs”.

The resurgence of solar panels, wanted by the Confederation to achieve climate objectives, could put the electricity network to the test, warns the network manager Swissgrid, arrested on Sunday by the Keystone-ATS agency.

The Swiss electricity grid already has structural bottlenecks, says Swissgrid, which are made worse by new large power plants. It needs to be developed to be able to transport the newly produced electricity. Faced with the challenges, the company says it is implementing a strategy for 2025 and has been developing its strategy until 2040 since November.

Ten projects in development by 2025

The 2025 strategy includes ten projects that are in different phases of construction and study. Others have been completed, such as the continuous extension to two 380 kilovolt lines between Pradella and La Punt (GR).

Swissgrid devotes between 200 and 290 million francs a year to the ten projects of the 2025 strategy.
