Gold prices muted ahead of Warsh’s Jackson Hole speech

Gold prices held steady near $4,600 an ounce on Friday as investors paused trading ahead of Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh’s scheduled address at the Jackson Hole economic symposium, where markets sought immediate direction on U.S. interest rates and upcoming monetary policy.

Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh Faces Jackson Hole Scrutiny

Financial markets braced for significant volatility as Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh prepared to deliver his inaugural Jackson Hole address. The high-profile economic policy symposium, often described as a Davos for central bankers, brought together prominent economists, financial market players, and US government officials in Wyoming, with central bankers gathering for the Kansas City Fed’s annual economic symposium.

The address marks Warsh’s first major public appearance at the gathering since assuming the role of Fed Chair on May 22, 2026. Traders and analysts anticipated clues regarding how the central bank plans to manage persistent inflation pressures while navigating broader structural challenges in monetary policy, as the Iran war continues to put pressure on the global economy. Inflation and the bond market, especially after yields soared to multi-decade highs, are at the top of the agenda at the annual Federal Reserve symposium, and Warsh is under pressure to explain how the Federal Reserve should handle inflation if price pressures persist. Fed officials on Thursday voiced continued concerns over the U.S. inflation outlook as central bankers gathered in Jackson Hole.

Precious Metals Flat Amid Cautious Trading

Spot gold was largely unchanged, trading flat at $4,602.19 an ounce by 05:34 ET (09:34 GMT), while U.S. gold futures eased slightly, falling 0.2% to $4,656.41. The precious metal had previously touched a three-month high near $4,700 an ounce earlier in the week, when concerns over U.S. fiscal policy and moves by the Treasury to support longer-dated bonds helped fuel demand for the precious metal. Despite those earlier gains, bullion remained on track for a marginal weekly decline following three consecutive weeks of increases. International gold prices also declined as investors awaited Warsh’s speech, with U.S. gold futures December contracts dropping 0.40% to $4,627.95 per troy ounce.

Domestic Indian Markets

Domestic Indian markets mirrored the cautious international sentiment. MCX gold futures for October 2026 delivery fell Rs 750 to Rs 1,58,252 per 10 grams, declining by roughly Rs 5,000 over a four-session stretch. Meanwhile, MCX silver futures for September 2026 delivery dropped Rs 1,200 to Rs 2,39,460 per kilogram. MCX gold October contracts were down 0.57% at ₹1,58,085, while MCX silver September futures were 0.55% down at ₹2,39,320 per kg around 9:15 AM on Friday, 28 August. Gold and silver prices opened lower on the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) on Friday as markets awaited the remarks.

Inflation Readings and Rate Hike Probabilities

Recent economic data complicated expectations for monetary easing. The Personal Consumption Expenditures Price Index, the Fed’s preferred inflation gauge, rose 3.7% in the 12 months through July. Warsh is scheduled to speak at 10 a.m. ET (1400 GMT) on Friday, with markets closely watching his remarks for signals on the Fed’s monetary policy outlook.

Gold prices are under pressure as inflation concerns grow, and even though the yellow metal is considered a hedge against inflation, this time the fear is that elevated inflation, largely due to the Middle East conflict, could force the U.S. Fed to raise rates from already elevated levels. The federal funds rate is currently in a target range of 3.5% to 3.75%, and at its last policy meeting on 29 July, the U.S. Fed kept rates unchanged in the 3.5%-3.75% range for the fifth consecutive policy meeting.
