No TV broadcast, no gala, no red carpet: the 79th Golden Globes ceremony in Los Angeles had to do without glamor. The names of the winners were published on social media.

The Western “The Power of the Dog” won the Golden Globe for best film drama. The flick also earned a trophy for New Zealand director Jane Campion and Australian supporting actor Kodi Smit-McPhee. Steven Spielberg’s musical “West Side Story” also won three Golden Globes in Beverly Hills on Sunday evening. In addition to the award in the “Comedy / Musical” category, main actress Rachel Zegler and supporting actress Ariana DeBose were also honored.

Star composer Hans Zimmer also increased his trophy collection. Born in Frankfurt, he won with his composition for the science fiction drama “Dune”. It was his 14th nomination in the category “Best Film Music”. He already had two Globes, 1995 for “The Lion King” and 2001 for “Gladiator”. The Golden Globe for best song went to pop star Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas O’Connell with their joint ballad “No Time To Die” for the James Bond film “No Time to Die”.

Other winners in the drama category were Australian actress Nicole Kidman (“Being the Ricardos”) and her US colleague Will Smith, who plays the father of US tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams in the sports drama “King Richard”. For Kidman it was the fifth Globe Award of her career, for Smith the first Globe win after six nominations. Andrew Garfield can also look forward to his first Golden Globe as a comedy lead actor in the musical film “Tick, Tick … Boom!”.

Kenneth Branagh, whose black and white film “Belfast” of the outbreak of violence in Northern Ireland in the late 1960s was a favorite, won only for Best Screenplay.

Golden Globes: “Succession” series dominates the TV categories

The family epic “Succession” was the big winner in the TV categories with three awards. As in 2020, the gloomy satire about the family power struggle in a media company won the award for best drama series, and leading actor Jeremy Strong and supporting actress Sarah Snook were also honored. In the comedy category, “Hacks”, a series about the friendship between an aging Las Vegas entertainer and her younger gag writer, won.

Unlike in previous years, not a single nominee was invited to the 79th event of the Association of the Foreign Press (HFPA). There was no red carpet reception and no television broadcast. The names of the winners were announced on the organization’s social media.

Because of the corona pandemic, only a small number of guests, HFPA members and donation recipients, were invited to the ballroom of the Beverly Hilton Hotel. The broadcaster NBC had canceled the TV broadcast – after sharp criticism of the organization, for example because of a lack of diversity. There was not a single black member on the committee. In the course of reforms, a diversity advisor was hired, a new board was elected, membership increased and made more diverse.

As part of the Globe award, the association also addressed its philanthropic work and reforms. Charitable representatives who receive donations from the HFPA were invited to announce the winners.
