Google is bringing an insulin resistance tracking feature to its wearable devices, marking an industry-first attempt by a major consumer technology company to monitor metabolic strain without continuous invasive blood draws.
Beyond Continuous Glucose Monitors: How the Algorithm Works
The newly unveiled system does not track or display continuous real-time blood sugar levels. Instead, the feature evaluates physiological factors that indicate how hard the human body is working to convert nutrients into energy. According to Alphabet’s health division, the underlying model was trained using data from a large pool of individuals to establish connections between minor physical shifts and rising insulin resistance.
Google Health will alert users if it detects patterns suggesting a shift in their insulin resistance, prompting them to consider lifestyle adjustments or consult a clinician. Left untreated, high insulin resistance can progress to prediabetes and Type 2 diabetes. Users can also connect continuous glucose monitors directly to the ecosystem via the Health Connect application.
“General overall, these changes in insulin resistance levels are very small,” Francis Ho, head of product for Pixel Watch at Google, explained in an interview. “Most adults don’t really think about tracking this, but if left untreated, it can turn into more serious conditions.”
Ho emphasized that the system’s explicit purpose is not to diagnose, treat, or directly measure blood glucose. Rather, the goal is to make invisible physiological stress visible to the wearer. Users seeking deeper context can query an AI coach available through the paid tier of the Google Health application.
The Health Guardian Suite and Hardware Rollout
The insulin resistance feature is part of a broader health toolkit dubbed “Health Guardian,” which aggregates new and existing sensors into a single interface. Alongside metabolic tracking, the suite introduces features that monitor blood pressure trends and nighttime breathing patterns.
These capabilities debut on the newly announced Pixel Watch 5 and Fitbit Air before rolling out to other hardware ecosystems. The Pixel Watch 5 launches in two case sizes: a 41-millimeter Wi-Fi model starting at $399, and a 45-millimeter equivalent priced at $429. Under the hood, the Pixel Watch 5 features upgraded GPS, higher processing speeds, expanded computing muscle, and a 50 percent increase in memory capacity. An automated step-by-step strength training guidance fitness feature will arrive via a post-launch software update.
Industry Momentum and Competitive Landscape
Google’s launch accelerates a broader push across the consumer tech sector to integrate metabolic health metrics into everyday fitness gear. Competitors are rapidly assembling similar pipelines. Whoop is evaluating ways to ingest data from standalone glucose monitors into its platform. Oura Health Oy secured a significant investment in 2024 from medical device manufacturer Dexcom Inc. to streamline cross-selling and data sharing. Meanwhile, Apple has previously tested a targeted blood glucose application aimed at individuals with prediabetes.

While the industry trends toward passive, sensor-driven monitoring that reduces manual data entry, integrated biometric tracking remains an emerging engineering frontier. As sensor fidelity and machine learning architectures improve, the boundary between consumer fitness tracking and preventative clinical monitoring continues to narrow.
