Google is launching a new system on Android that allows users to securely import and export passwords and passkeys between providers like Google Password Manager, 1Password, Bitwarden, and Dashlane in just a few seconds, bypassing the security risks of traditional unencrypted file transfers.
OS-Level Architecture Replaces Vulnerable Text Files
For years, migrating credentials between password management applications meant exporting a vault to a local storage format.
Google’s newly deployed transfer system alters this dynamic by shifting the operation directly to the operating system level. Android now handles the data exchange natively between the applications installed on the device. There’s no unencrypted text file for you to deal with on the import or export.
Instead of manual file handling, the transfer protocol executes securely in the background in just a few seconds.
How the Android Credential Hand-Off Works
When a user decides to switch services, the sequence unfolds through a structured workflow:

- Start the move: Launch your target password manager application and select the feature designed to copy or import your passkeys and passwords from an alternate service. The password manager then hands the task over to Android.
- Let Android securely coordinate the data transfer: The operating system will independently scan your device for existing password apps and display a list of eligible sources you can pull data from.
- Review and authorize: As soon as you press “Continue,” Android redirects you to your current password vault so you can pick, examine, and approve the migration. Then your data will be quickly and securely transferred between the apps in just a few seconds.
Ecosystem Compatibility and Future Expansion
The rollout currently supports a robust group of major credential managers. Out of the gate, the system coordinates natively with Google Password Manager, 1Password, Bitwarden Password Manager, and Dashlane.
Google has indicated that more providers are on the way to support the protocol.
