The Google TV Streamer arrived in 2024 with a $100 price tag, positioned to replace the aging Chromecast architecture as Google’s premier streaming box. It didn’t take long for holiday promotions to push that entry barrier even lower. Now, the baseline cost sits firmly at $150.
Memory pricing is playing a primary role here. Under the hood, the device packs 4GB of RAM and 32GB of storage.
Component costs are biting hard. Other recent Google hardware releases have faced similar adjustments under these broader market pressures.
The Nest Lineup Takes a Broad Markup
Streaming hardware isn’t the only casualty of this pricing reset. The entire current roster of Nest security cameras and doorbells has also shifted upward.
The adjustments break down across the portfolio as follows:
- Battery-Powered Nest Cam: Increased from $180 to $200.
- Nest Cam Outdoor (Wired, 2nd Gen): Jumped from $150 to $200.
- Nest Cam Indoor (Wired, 3rd Gen): Risen from $100 to $130.
- Nest Doorbells (Wired and Battery): Both now cost $200, up from $180.
Not everything took a hit. The Nest Cam with Floodlight bundle remains stable at $280. Meanwhile, core climate and hub devices—including the Nest Hub, thermostats, and the newly released Google Home Speaker—avoided the initial wave of adjustments.
Where to Find Remaining Launch Stock
Inventory lag works in the consumer’s favor right now. Major distributors have not updated all of their listings uniformly.
Retailers like Amazon may still carry older stock at the original launch prices, but supply channels are draining fast. Anyone holding off on upgrading their smart home ecosystem needs to move quickly before legacy inventory completely cycles out of the supply chain.
The era of budget-friendly streaming boxes and aggressively priced smart home security is tightening. As manufacturing costs dictate new market realities, smart home upgrades just got considerably more expensive.
