O Google seems to want its users to use the profiles created in the Play Games. As reported by Android Authoritythe global update that arrived for the Play Store will ask people to create an account on the gaming service and use it elsewhere.

In general, this account serves to facilitate logging into compatible games, as the process is now done automatically. Furthermore, this profile also allows achievements to be acquired as the player completes a goal and allows progress made in games to be saved in the cloud.

This is interesting because it prevents you from losing progress in these games when something unexpected happens or when you change devices. Likewise, Google mentioned that improvements were made “to help avoid disabling your protection due to exploitation”. The company was contacted for details, but has not yet responded.
