The incident highlights the growing phenomenon of “review bombing” – where online reviews are exploited to unfairly target businesses unrelated to a specific event. Google had to step in and remove many of them, emphasizing they “violate our policies.”

“These reviews violate our policies and have been removed,” a Google spokesperson’s emailed statement.

The tech giant ensures to maintain the integrity of its platform stating that reviews should “reflect a genuine experience at a place or business,” and they take down content posted from multiple accounts to manipulate a place’s rating.
