“If the bridge construction site, which lasted almost a year and a half, made many people sweat and caused mobility problems, today it paralyzes us with beauty!”. These were the words of Hotton mayor Martine Schmit as she began the speech session of this inaugural, but above all festive, day. “It took us a lot of patience but the result is worth it and beautifies the heart of our town,” before thanking everyone who participated in this major project.
Indeed, the Commune pulled out all the stops to mark the occasion, with breakfasts and aperitif dinners offered each time to 500 Hotton residents, a marching band and multiple activities organized this Saturday, September 30.

The protocol part took place in the presence of regional ministers Valérie De Bue and Willy Borsus, the mayor of the twin commune of Izegem, Jean-François Collin, the director of the Wallonia Rural Foundation (FRW) who accompanied the project of site representatives including the Galère company which carried out the work, and of course the Hotton municipal authorities.
More than €5 million investment
The Alderman of Works, Gui Ponsard, who followed the construction site from start to finish, recalled that it was one of, if not the largest project carried out in the commune of Hotton, representing an investment of more of €5 million subsidized both by the Region and European funds. “I also emphasize the coordination and perfect collaboration that reigned during this project. 60 site meetings were organized to try to manage it as best as possible.”

This festive day continues throughout the day of Saturday September 30 with the organization of a host of activities including the presentation at the kiosk of a video retracing the history of the Hotton bridge, produced by the 5th primary school students of the Hotton municipal school, the customer’s weekend at the merchants, but also this evening with fireworks and a free concert by the Bande à Lolo.
