BOSTON — Trevor Story hit a grand slam that sent the ball over the “Green Monster” into the hands of a former player for the Boston Red Sox, who beat the Seattle Mariners 7-3 on Friday.
One night after hitting three home runs that went over the famous Fenway Park outfield wall, Story kept going.
He found an up-and-in slider on a 1-2 count off Robbie Ray (4-4) and sent the ball to the front row to give Boston a 4-0 lead in the third inning.
Jonny Gomes, a former outfielder for the 2013 World Series-winning Red Sox, was sitting behind the giant fence. He took a few steps to the right and caught Story’s batted ball.
Smiling, Gomes exchanged a clap with the spectator next to him.
Jackie Bradley added a three-run homer for the Red Sox, who won for the seventh time in 10 games.
Austin Davis (1-1) relieved starter Michael Wacha with two outs in the fifth inning and two men in the driveways. He struck out JP Cawford before perfecting the sixth inning for the win.
For the Mariners, the Dominican Julio Rodríguez 4-0. The Venezuelans Eugenio Suárez 4-1 with a run scored, Luis Torrens 1-0.
For the Red Sox, Puerto Ricans Kiké Hernández 3-2 with a run scored, Christian Vázquez 3-1 with a run scored. The Dominicans Rafael Devers 4-0, Franchy Cordero 1-1 with a run scored. Mexican Alex Verdugo 4-0.
