Grand Theft Auto VI Hit by New Leaks and Take Two Subpoenas

The gaming world has been rattled by a major breach involving Grand Theft Auto VI, as multiple gameplay clips and an apparent map for the highly anticipated title surfaced online. The leaked material showed gameplay of a main character driving, playing basketball, flying a plane, and brawling. In response to the breach, Take-Two Interactive filed multiple subpoenas in the Southern District of New York targeting Microsoft and Discord.

The legal petitions ask Microsoft and Discord to release records, account IDs, registration emails, IP addresses, phone numbers, and linked content related to online accounts and servers involved in posting the leaks, including an account named Cyberleek. Both companies were given a deadline of September 4 to provide the records. Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive did not immediately respond to requests for comment and have not issued a public statement regarding the purported hack, although social media platforms such as X and Reddit have removed multiple posts sharing the leaks.

Manifesto and Industry Backlash Against Digital-Only Releases

The security breach was framed by the individual or group calling itself Cyberleek as a protest against the video game industry’s shift toward all-digital releases. Alongside the leaked footage, an online manifesto titled “Three Commandments” criticized publishers for selling licenses instead of physical copies, shipping unfinished games, and locking content on discs. Cyberleek’s manifesto also took aim at pre-orders, stating that No consumer shall pay for a game through digital storefronts before release and independent review, and adding that pre-orders were originally created because physical discs had manufacturing limits.

The franchise is scheduled to launch without a physical disc for the first time in its history, with physical copies containing a download code instead. The breach drew mixed reactions from gamers, with some expressing sympathy for developers while others criticized Rockstar. Meanwhile, the coalition Stop Killing Games urged the community not to send money to the leakers, noting that illegal means do nothing to protect consumer rights and harm the thousands of developers who worked on the project. Take-Two Interactive’s stock also plummeted amid the chaos.

Pricing Tiers and Pre-Order Anticipation

Ahead of official pricing confirmations, European retail chain FNAC accidentally listed product pages for the open-world epic under placeholder names, suggesting potential pricing tiers. Based on European database listings that include value-added tax, expected U.S. equivalents point to a standard edition at $79.99, a deluxe edition at $99.99, a premium edition at $119.99, and a collector’s edition at $189.99.

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick stated during an earnings call that the company recorded an exceptional start to pre-orders, noting that more players pre-ordered the $100 ultimate edition than the standard $80 version. Zelnick also remarked on pricing philosophy, stating, Consumers pay for the value we deliver to them, and our job is to charge them much less than that value. The title is officially slated for release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on November 19.
