In an interview with the specialist magazine Kicker the 30-year-old explains his move from Arsenal to the Werkself. The exchange with the Bayer managers and coach Xabi Alonso was decisive for him.
“The club and Xabi told me beforehand what role I should have. And that corresponds exactly to my qualities, my strengths,” says Xhaka. The Nati captain was the conductor in the Bayer game in the first three Bundesliga games, all of which Leverkusen won.

“If there had been a different plan, you wouldn’t have seen me here,” Xhaka clarifies. It just has to fit from both sides, you can see that too. “I feel very comfortable here, also on the pitch with the boys. They took me in really well.”
