Sunday shortly before 11 a.m., a group of four ski tourers set off from San Bernardino (GR) towards the Col dei Omenit. The group consisted of an experienced couple and their two children. Shortly before reaching their destination, at an altitude of 2651 meters, an avalanche triggered under the feet of the father and one of the sons, dragging them for about 150 meters into the valley.

While the son managed to free himself from the mass of snow, the father remained completely buried. Although he was able to be located by the other members of the group, the man could not be freed until the emergency services intervened. Airlifted in critical condition to the University Hospital of Zurich, he died in the afternoon.
