Help for the homeless: the “Great Cold Plan” activated this Wednesday, November 1 in Wallonia

“We must stop opposing environmental preservation measures to say that we are not going to house people. We cannot accept in a city like Brussels that people are sleeping in the street,” argues Philippe Close. “People are often afraid of social housing and that there will be an increase in crime. But that’s not what we see,” he explains. He nevertheless admits that there is “too low an employment rate in our social housing. Only 17% of people who live in social housing work and this too must be taken into account in our social policies.

Concerning the reception crisis, he calls on the entire political class to act. “I’m not just asking Nicole de Moor. If everyone does their part, we can get there,” he says. “We are not Greece or Italy, they try to give us this image with a kind of influx. I understand that for my Greek or Italian colleagues it is complicated for them. We are not in this situation,” declares Philippe Close.

On the recent departure of Julien Uyttendaele and secularism within the PS, Philippe Close is categorical. “Who was the major party that passed secular laws: euthanasia, abortion, marriage and adoption for same-sex couples? It’s us, it’s the PS. He never missed a voice. The MR never voted for these laws,” he explains. “(…) The debate on secularism hides something else. We want to talk about secularism so as not to address real social problems. But we have no problem discussing secularism.”
