Great energy saving potential: Vienna General Hospital is replacing up to 52,000 lights with the support of Wien Energie

Wien Energie is a project and energy-saving contracting partner of the Vienna General Hospital – with new lights, Vienna General Hospital saves 2.7 gigawatt hours of electricity and around 700 tons of CO2 annually in the long term

Vienna (OTS) – As a project and energy-saving contracting partner, Wien Energie will replace 8,000 aisle lights from the 1970s with new and more economical ones at the AKH Vienna University Hospital in the first project phase next year. “Sustainability and energy efficiency play an important role in Vienna. In order to become climate neutral by 2040, it is important to turn all the screws. By replacing the lights at Vienna General Hospital, Wien Energie is also demonstrating the highest level of expertise in this area and is supporting one of Europe’s largest hospitals in significantly saving energy and CO2,” says Peter Hanke, City Councilor for Economic Affairs and Vienna Public Utilities. By replacing the 8,000 aisle lights, most of which light up all year round and around the clock, electricity consumption can be reduced by one gigawatt hour in the first year and a total of 265 tons of CO2 can be saved. After successful evaluation of the first project phase at the end of 2024, the project is to be rolled out to 52,000 lights. This means that 700 tons of CO2 and up to 2.7 gigawatt hours of electricity can be saved annually, which alone corresponds to the electricity consumption of 1,350 average households.

Focus on high resource conservation and energy efficiency

“Sustainability in healthcare is an important topic that is becoming increasingly important these days. It’s about reducing the environmental impact of the healthcare sector while maintaining the quality of medical care. This project will not only make the Vienna General Hospital more energy and cost efficient, but also more environmentally friendly,” says Peter Hacker, City Councilor for Social Affairs, Health and Sport. The existing lights are a special size that are installed in the ventilation of the corridors of the Vienna General Hospital. In order to proceed in a particularly resource-saving manner, one requirement of the project was to fit the new lights into the existing metal housings. “We take climate protection very seriously! With this showcase project, as an energy-saving contracting partner, we support the Vienna General Hospital to become more efficient, more economical and more sustainable. This is where existing materials meet the latest LED technology. In an extensive development process, a very innovative, flexible and energy-efficient light was constructed that optimally preserves the look and feel of the rooms. In addition, the quality of the lighting is increased and the rooms are illuminated homogeneously,” says Michael Strebl, Chairman of the Wien Energie Management Board.

Sustainability, energy efficiency and environmental management at the Vienna General Hospital

As part of the joint innovation management of the Vienna General Hospital and VAMED-KMB, more and more ideas on the topics of sustainability, energy efficiency and environmental management are being introduced. This rising trend also shows that these issues are of concern to everyone. On our own online platform, employees can submit innovative suggestions for the optimal use of resources and with the aim of sustainable development as part of so-called “competitions”, the implementation options for which are continuously examined and evaluated. Furthermore, the establishment of a separate environmental team at the Vienna General Hospital shows the importance of these developments.

“From a lighting perspective, a hospital is an entire city on a small scale with similarly diverse lighting tasks. A resource-saving approach is very important here. The high efficiency and quality standards were checked and monitored externally by the MA 39 light laboratory and will be further evaluated by the VAMED-KMB as part of the project,” says Herwig Wetzlinger, Director of the Vienna General Hospital.

The requirements for the new lights were defined together with the Technical Directorate of the Vienna General Hospital and the VAMED-KMB. The Europe-wide tender was carried out by Wien Energie. The tender was won by the Austrian company Kiteo, a subsidiary of Lumitech.
