Great sadness in South Tyrol, in Italy and in the ski circus. The former slalom specialist Manuel Pescollderung died at the age of 41 in the San Maurizio hospital in Bozen (It).
Just a few weeks ago, the Italian was diagnosed with an “insidious lightning disease”, as the “Kronen Zeitung” reports. It is not published which disease Pescollderungg actually suffered from.
The ex-ski professional leaves behind his wife and two young daughters. The youngest is just a month old.
Pescollderungg competed in the World Cup from 2004 to 2007. However, he was never able to collect any points. He did this successfully in the European Cup. There he finished in the top 10 several times and was also able to bring home one of two medals for Italy at the 2009 Winter Universiade with silver in the slalom.
“Tragic Destiny”
After retiring from professional sport, Pescollderungg worked as a ski instructor in his homeland, the Val Badia, where the well-known World Cup resort of Alta Badia is also located.
The Italian vice world champion in slalom in 1997, Lara Magoni (53), mourns her friend on Facebook: “The news of Manuel Pescollderung’s death hit me like a bolt from the blue. It’s unbelievable that an athlete and a sportsman like him could be hit by such a tragic fate. He leaves a great void in the entire Italian ski family, in the mountains and in the snow.” (wst)
