The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Giorgos Gerapetritis, upon his arrival at the meeting of foreign ministers of the NATO member states in Brussels, stated the following:

“Today is a particularly important day for NATO for two reasons: The first is the 75th anniversary of the founding of NATO, an alliance that throughout time has made a positive contribution to security and the consolidation of peace and prosperity worldwide.”

And he added that the second reason is Sweden’s accession to the Alliance.

“Greece considers it important to further strengthen the relationship between NATO and the European Union”

“I was happy to see the Swedish flag at NATO headquarters. This is a historic moment for the Alliance. Greece supported its accession from the beginning. We are happy that in the last 20 years, NATO has practically doubled its members, a particularly positive sign for peace and security in the world”, emphasized Mr. Gerapetritis.

Ukraine and security on the agenda

As he stated in his statements, the meeting of the Foreign Ministers will be concerned with the issue of the Russian attack against Ukraine, noting that “we are particularly concerned about the current situation. We need to develop sustainable ways to further support Ukraine against Russian aggression.”

“Also, we have to deal with issues concerning the Southern Neighborhood”, added the foreign minister, speaking about the escalation of aggression in this region and stressing that “we have to see how the situation in Gaza will develop and, above all, the diffusion tendencies in Syria , in Lebanon and the Red Sea. These are issues of the utmost importance worldwide.”

At the same time, he said that issues regarding modern forms of security, “such as cyber security and protection against disinformation” will be examined.

“NATO plays a decisive role. Greece considers it important to further strengthen the relationship between NATO and the European Union. Transatlantic cooperation is of the utmost importance for the preservation of universal values, such as democracy, the rule of law, international law and obviously, human dignity and humanitarian law,” Giorgos Gerapetritis concluded.
