A 54-year-old woman in Greece has given birth to a healthy baby girl weighing 3,490 grams, following a pregnancy achieved with an embryo that had been frozen for more than two decades, according to reports from Internewscast.
The Transfer in Athens
The infant was born after an embryo transfer procedure performed on December 23, 2025, at a private clinic in Athens.
The genetic material used for the conception had been cryopreserved on March 17, 2004. According to the medical team overseeing the case, exactly 22 years, five months, and 23 days passed between the initial freezing and the live birth.
Surpassing Global Records
The medical team behind the procedure stated that, based on their review of existing scientific literature, this represents the longest internationally documented case of cryopreserved autologous genetic material resulting in a live birth.
Previous recognized milestones for long-term storage resulting in successful live births included a case in Japan with a storage period of 18 years and three months, and another in Israel involving a span of 17 years. The Athens clinical team has compiled the clinical and laboratory data from the procedure and plans to submit the findings for publication in international medical journals.
Turning to the Past After Loss
The clinical milestone stems from a personal tragedy experienced by the mother, named Christina. She had originally used the same batch of embryos in 2004, resulting in the birth of a son on her first attempt at in vitro fertilization.
In October 2025, her son—who was then 21 years old—was killed in a car accident. Following this loss, she made the decision to return to the clinic to utilize the remaining embryos that had stayed in storage since her original fertility treatment.
Navigating Greek Law
The procedure required navigating strict legal parameters under Greek law. The medical team had to complete all necessary medical preparations and secure formal approval from Greece’s National Authority of Assisted Reproduction before the patient reached the legal age limit of 54.
Konstantinos Pantos, the patient’s gynecologist and secretary general of the Hellenic Society of Reproductive Medicine, characterized the birth as a significant clinical and scientific development. At the same time, he emphasized the necessity of pairing ongoing advancements in reproductive medicine with direct clinical compassion.
