The federal government is providing up to 80 million euros for the promotion of green hydrogen for the transport sector. “Hydrogen and fuel cell applications are a future technology with great potential for the transport sector. We must use all technologies to achieve our climate protection goals. Hydrogen is an important addition to battery-electric mobility, especially when it comes to heavy loads and long ranges. Truck manufacturers assume that by 2030 almost every fifth newly registered commercial vehicle will be running on hydrogen,” said Transport Minister Volker Wissing yesterday.
The money is to be used to build electrolysis plants for the production of hydrogen. Systems with a minimum output of one megawatt and which are operated exclusively with electricity from renewable energy sources are funded. The funding is part of the National Innovation Program for Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology, which runs until 2026, and is intended to prepare for a later market ramp-up, as the energy source is not yet competitive, as is emphasized.
