Greensboro Urban Loop will open soon

The final section of the Greensboro Urban Loop, also known as Interstate 840, is due to be completed in January, which will be a faster route for drivers traveling north and east of the city.

The decades-old collar linking Interstates 73, 40 and 85 to US 421, US 220 and US 29, from North Elm Street and scheduled for completion this spring, is ahead of schedule.

MOBILITY

The road is expected to be ready for traffic from January 20, depending on weather and temperatures and the completion of details such as striping, signage and installation of protective gratings.

When the works are finished, access to the Piedmont Triad International Airport and the passage to Winston-Salem, High Point or even Charlotte, will be easier for another large part of the population; likewise, the drive from the Lake Jeanette area to the Triangle around Raleigh will be easier, much shorter, and without traffic lights.

This 4-lane section crosses north of Church Street, but will only have one interchange at Yanceyville Street. The final section is expected to accommodate an average daily traffic of around 19,000 vehicles.
