The Styrian, who came on as a substitute in the second half when the score was 0-2 against RC Lens, was initially one of the main actors in Breisgauer’s comeback, before he scored the decisive goal in the 99th minute in the 3-2 win after extra time.
At Lens, the suspended Kevin Danso was missing from central defense. The first leg in northern France remained goalless.
Philipp Lienhart was still missing from Freiburg due to injury, Junior Adamu was on the bench. David Pereira (28th) and Elye Wahi (45th + 2) brought Lens forward against initially weak home teams before Freiburg came up with substitute Gregoritsch in the center of the attack.
Roland Sallai (67th) scored the next goal, and the Hungarian finally forced extra time in the 92nd minute – again with a deflected shot.
Gregoritsch found a good header opportunity deep into stoppage time before scoring his fourth goal in his sixth Europa League appearance. The 29-year-old wanted to head the ball to Sallai, but created the ideal template for himself and finished it confidently. “It’s unbelievable how often you get to experience something like that,” said Austria’s team striker. “This is a game for the ages.”
Milan are also further, the Rossoneri lost 2-3 at Stade Rennes, but were secured after the 3-0 win in Milan. Benfica knocked Toulouse out of the competition after a 0-0 draw in France, and Sporting, the second major club from Lisbon, also progressed. Olympique Marseille ended Shakhtar Donetsk’s European Cup season after a 3-1 win in southern France.
In the Conference League, Union Saint-Gilloise with Heinz Lindner on the bench pushed Eintracht Frankfurt out of the competition. The Bundesliga club deservedly lost 2-1 to the Belgians in front of their home crowd and was eliminated after a 2-2 draw in the first leg.
After goals from Cameron Puertas (47th) and Dennis Eckert (80th) for Union, Dina Ebimbe (88th) scored too late for Eintracht. Ajax Amsterdam made it into the round of the best 16 with a 2-1 draw at Bodö/Glimt in Norway. Dinamo Zagreb, Servette Geneva, Olympiakos Piraeus and Molde FK are also there.
