Elon Musk, via his start-up xAI, has just announced the launch of its own generative artificial intelligence designed to compete with ChatGPTChatGPT. Remember, however, that the billionaire signed an open letter requesting a moratorium on the development of AI earlier this year. The AI in question is called Grok, a word taken from the science fiction novel In a foreign land by Robert A. Heinlein, and which means to understand something completely.
Grok has the particularity of having access to information in real time thanks to access to X (formerly TwitterTwitter). xAI also says that Grok will answer questions refused by other chatbots. According to the announcement, the AI is a beta version that has only been trained for two months, and therefore should improve over time. The large language model behind the chatbot is called Grok-1, and is said to have exceeded GPT-3.5 on some tests like GSM8k, MMLU and HumanEval. However, it would still be quite far from the scores of GPT-4 and Claude 2.
An X Premium subscription will be required

According to xAI, Grok’s personality is inspired by the book The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas AdamsDouglas Adams, and would tend to respond with humor. The example given is a question about cocaine manufacturing that includes steps like “get a degree in chemistry” and “set up a clandestine laboratory in a remote location.”
To be able to use Grok, you will need to register on the waiting list. A list which is only open to certified users, in other words, who pay around ten euros per month for an X Premium subscription.
