In Alzheimer’s dementia, cerebral nerve cells are irreversibly destroyed. The disease progresses differently for each person affected, which makes both prevention and treatment difficult. Belgian and British researchers now appear to have succeeded in developing an effective drug.
Experts assume that the number of people with dementia will increase by more than a third to almost 300,000 in ten years. Around 55 million people worldwide are affected by dementia.
