Researchers from l’Northwestern University in the United States discovered a way to grow hair for people affected by baldness. According to the results of the study published on May 22, 2023 in the scientific journal of the American Academy of Sciences PNAS, this evil finds its deep cause in the rigidity of the cells which produce the hair. This trait comes with age. Thus, to prevent baldness, these scientists slow down the production of the proteins which cause this cellular rigidity.
Experiments have been carried out on aged mice and indeed demonstrate how cells become rigid. The rigidity of the cells is therefore caused by a reinforcement of the cytoskeleton. During the research, the researchers used the microARN miR-205. This made it possible to observe that the natural expression of miR-205 increases by approximately 50% as cells move from the telogen phase to the anagen phase, suggesting that this ARN would be involved in this transition to a new cycle.
They thus confirmed the hypothesis which indicates that hair can be lost with age. “They were starting to grow new hair after 10 days of treatment. We do not create new stem cells. We stimulate those who are already there to start producing hair”said a statement from Rui Yiprofessor of dermatology at Northwestern University and author of the study.
“Often we still have these stem cells, but they can’t make hair anymore”, continued the scientist. The use of microARN has proven to be quite effective in the case of people whose age is advanced. “Since there is the possibility of injecting these microRNAs directly into the skin, the next step will be to test whether a localized treatment can stimulate hair production”has indicated Rui Yi, professor of dermatology at Northwestern University and author of the study.
