Four children aged between nine months and 10 years were murdered along with their mother in their apartment east of Paris, in what authorities called an exceptionally violent crime.

Neighbors saw a pool of blood in front of the door of the house on Monday and alerted the police, who discovered five dead inside, prosecutor Jean-Baptiste Bladier told reporters in the city of Meaux.
The mother and two daughters aged 7 and 10 had been stabbed several times on the night from Sunday to Monday, the prosecutor said. Two children, ages 9 months and 4 years, were asphyxiated or drowned.
The prosecutor described the apartment as extremely disorderly and bloodstained.
On Tuesday, there were flowers, a stuffed animal and Christmas decorations on the fence in front of the residential building in honor of the victims. The apartment windows were closed.
The motive for the crime is unknown. The suspect, a 33-year-old man born in the Paris suburb of Colombes, was arrested Tuesday outside his father’s home northeast of the French capital, the prosecutor said.
“It’s kind of creepy. An entire family was murdered, stabbed in atrocious conditions. “It is an absolute horror,” Meaux Mayor Jean-Francois Cope told the AP.
The suspect had stabbed his partner once before, when she was pregnant with their eldest child in 2019, but the investigation was abandoned because he was declared mentally incompetent at the time of the attack, the prosecutor explained.
The suspect was placed in a psychiatric hospital in 2017, and attempted suicide that same year, the prosecutor added.
