Grundberg: 3 critical paths to achieve progress in efforts to resolve the Yemen crisis

Yemen – The UN envoy to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, confirmed that achieving progress in efforts to resolve the Yemeni crisis is linked to “three critical tracks, which include achieving stability in the Middle East, avoiding the parties to the conflict exploiting the circumstances resulting from the Red Sea crisis to escalate hostilities, and maintaining channels of communication.” “Open.”

This came in an interview conducted by Chinese television “CCTV” with Grundberg, the contents of which were published on the website of the Office of the UN Envoy, on Thursday.

Grundberg said, “Thanks to the notable support from Oman and Saudi Arabia, the (Yemeni) parties agreed to a set of commitments at the end of 2023 that will form the basis of the United Nations road map, the implementation of which will lead to a real ceasefire and the start of a political process.”

Grundberg previously announced on December 23, 2023, the commitment of the Yemeni government and the Houthi group to a package of measures within a “road map” that includes a comprehensive ceasefire and improving citizens’ living conditions.

During the interview with Chinese television, Grundberg explained that “to achieve this progress in light of the current complex situation, there are three paths that will be very decisive.”

He stated that the first path “represents the necessity of broader stability in the Middle East.”

He continued, “This will allow the parties and the international community to refocus and re-engage in the long-term settlement of the conflict in Yemen.”

“In solidarity with Gaza,” which has been facing a devastating Israeli war with American support since October 7, 2023, the Houthis have targeted, with missiles and drones, Israeli or related cargo ships in the Red and Arab Bahrain.

Grundberg added that the second path includes the Yemeni parties realizing “that this is not the appropriate time to exploit the current situation in order to escalate hostilities.”

While the third path, according to the UN envoy, is to “keep the channels of communication that were open as widely as possible to ensure the ability to achieve those commitments.”

On March 18, the Yemeni government announced, in a statement by Prime Minister Ahmed Awad bin Mubarak, the suspension of the UN road map for a ceasefire with the Houthis, “due to the group’s escalation in the Red Sea and the threat to international navigation.”

For about two years, Yemen has witnessed a lull in a war that began about 10 years ago between forces loyal to the legitimate government, supported by an Arab military coalition led by neighboring Saudi Arabia, and the Houthi forces supported by Iran, who have controlled governorates and cities, including Sanaa, since September 2014.
