During an annular solar eclipse, the sun appears surrounded by a “ring of fire.” But the phenomenon can only be seen in a narrow corridor.
Frankfurt – During a solar eclipse, the new moon moves in front of the sun and obscures it – an event that occurs several times a year, but can only be seen in a limited area. On October 14th, part of America will enjoy an impressive annular solar eclipse, while other parts of the continent will still see a partial solar eclipse.
During an annular solar eclipse, the moon is not close enough to the Earth to completely obscure the disk of the sun. An “edge” remains, forming a brightly glowing “ring”. In the case of the October 14 solar eclipse, this “ring” can be seen in a narrow path, only regarding 110 miles (180 kilometers) wide, that runs across the United States. It can also be partially seen in Central America, Colombia and Brazil. Almost all of the American continent beyond this corridor will see a partial solar eclipse – the moon only partially covers the sun and without the spectacular ring.

Annular solar eclipse seen in parts of the US on October 14th
The annular solar eclipse is also called the “wreath of fire solar eclipse” because at its maximum the sun looks as if it is surrounded by a wreath of fire. Unfortunately, the spectacle in the sky cannot be seen from Germany – apart from live streams on the Internet.

The solar eclipse takes place in the late followingnoon and evening in German time. The partial eclipse of the sun begins at 5:03 p.m., and the maximum eclipse is reached at 7:59 p.m. – now the “ring” or “wreath of fire” should be visible if you are in the right place. The solar eclipse will end once more at 10:55 p.m.

Solar eclipses occur because the disks of the sun and moon appear to be of similar size
The sun is actually regarding 400 times larger than the moon. The spectacular solar eclipses on Earth are only possible because the moon is regarding 400 times closer to the earth than the sun. This makes it possible for the moon’s disk to appear as large as the sun’s and to completely obscure the sun. However, the total solar eclipse only occurs rarely – in Germany it will only be seen once more in 2084. Partial darkening of the sun, on the other hand, occurs much more frequently. The next solar eclipse visible in Germany will be a partial solar eclipse on March 29, 2025.
Two weeks before or following a solar eclipse there is always a lunar eclipse – which, in contrast to the solar eclipse, can be seen wherever the moon is in the sky at the time of the eclipse. The next lunar eclipse will take place on October 28th and can also be clearly seen from Germany. However, only a small part of the moon is eclipsed. (tab)
