In June 2023, Peru faced an increase in the number of cases of Guillain-Barre syndrome, a rare and potentially fatal disease that causes the immune system to attack the peripheral nervous system. Guillain-Barre syndrome can cause muscle weakness, pain, and in more severe cases, paralysis of leg muscles, arm muscles, or respiratory muscles. Although this condition mostly occurs after an infection, we don’t know exactly why.
