Guilty of hit and run: the mother of a young victim cries out from the heart

The mother of a young hit and run victim, who has been unable to speak or walk since the accident, has urged drivers to stop despite the consequences, while the offending driver was eventually found guilty by a jury on Wednesday.

“Every little aspect of our life has been affected by it. […] I’ve hammered it for the past four years: accidents happen. But stop and help the person. It’s the human thing to do,” said Ontario mother Abby Roby in an interview with Global News on Thursday.

Jesse Aaron Bleck, 29, was found guilty by a jury on Wednesday of driving while prohibited and of committing a hit and run, fleeing after colliding with Tristan Roby, then 17 years old, who was riding a bicycle a few days before his birthday in July 2019.

Four years later, the life of the young man, who had suffered a traumatic brain injury, a fractured leg, bruised lungs, a broken jaw, is far from being back to the way it was before, while he still cannot speak or walk, reported the English-language media.

“The boy we all knew died that day. It’s the reality we live in, and I was glad he was found guilty, it’s a good ending for us, but he can still walk around and have a life, while my boy can’t even walk or say ‘I love you mom,’” said Abby Roby.

If she deplores the “lack of remorse” of the accused, the jury’s decision has alleviated her suffering a little, although the situation remains “bitter-sweet” for the mother, she confided.

“What would have made my heart a little lighter would have been to see at least a piece, a mustard seed of any remorse. But I think the jury has it all for our family: guilty,” she told Global News.

Jesse Aaron Bleck is expected to receive his sentence on September 12.
