After visiting Mauritania and the Gambia, the new president of Senegal, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, is currently in Guinea-Bissau for a working and friendship visit. There are numerous bilateral issues between the two countries, notably that of the common maritime border.

The Senegalese President, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, continues his diplomatic tour in West Africa in order to strengthen regional cooperation. Bissau is the third stop on this tour by the brand new Senegalese president since his inauguration last April. After Mauritania and Gambia, he visits his southern neighbor, Guinea-Bissau. This visit of a few hours aims to examine the bilateral agreements between the two countries.

Guinea-Bissau and Senegal share a common border of more than 300 km, along which a nearly forty-year-old rebellion led by Casamance separatists persists. Guinea-Bissau also plays a mediating role in this long-standing conflict, and this issue could be discussed during the face-to-face meeting between the two heads of state. Another important issue is that of the delineation of the common maritime border, a subject of dormant dispute for which the solutions recommended so far have not been successful. In addition, the thorny issue of unlicensed Chinese trawlers, which operate in Guinea-Bissau waters and buy the catches of Senegalese artisanal fishermen, could also be addressed.

In the area of security, around a hundred Senegalese soldiers are still deployed in Bissau as part of the Standby Force of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), whose mandate was renewed last December for one year.
