Guinea: the showdown continues between the junta and the media

After a day without press, the threat to boycott all government activities and a march by journalists on June 1, 2023, the High Authority for Communication (HAC) invited Guinean press associations and the union to talks on Wednesday May 24, 2023.

The authorities of the transition have blocked access to news sites in Guinea, the principles of social networks, jammed the frequency of certain radios and dismantled the transmitters of radio Sabari FM and Love FM since May 17. By way of protest, a day without press was organized on Tuesday May 23 and other more vigorous actions are expected.

To find a way out of this standoff between the Guinean government and the country’s media, the HAC, the regulatory body, has started talks with the protagonists. Unfortunately, after meeting with the authorities of the transition and Guinean press associations, the dispute was not resolved. Therefore, the protest actions remain maintained.

“Meeting today (Wednesday, May 24, 2023) does not negate actions. You have noticed that we have blacked out, we will continue to do marches, synergies until all restrictions are lifted and the transmitters of Sabari are returned to us, “explained the spokesperson for the press associations Ibrahima Sory Traoré, after the meeting with the commissioners of the High Authority for Communication (HAC).

Mr. Traoré specifies that he suggested to the media regulatory body to carry out its own investigations to see what is happening on the ground. “Freedom of the press is threatened… as we have said here, the situation is very serious…”, he adds.

For Aboubacar Yacine Diallo, president of the High Authority for Communication, the press associations have presented their concerns. In turn, he promises to report this to the authorities of the transition to find solutions to the problems posed.

“The associations have brought their concerns to our attention. We promised them to raise their concerns with the authorities of the transition so that suitable solutions are found”, indicated Boubacar Yacine Diallo.

For the moment the positions are rockets. It remains to be seen if the Hac will make the junta bend before the media takes the next step.
