Gun Jam delivers frantic pace to mix FPS with music | Analysis / Review

2023-04-24 19:50:00

The game Gun Jam was released last April 19th as a new rhythm action FPS, for those who enjoy shooting games and music at the same time. It was developed by Jaw Drop Games and published by Raw Fury.

What will this new game be able to deliver to the player? Does the experience live up to its promise? TudoCelular tested the title in recent days and tells the details in this full review.

game modes

This game provides players with two options for game modes. One of them consists of the “Arena”, which aims to reach the highest number of points until the song ends. They are obtained by destroying opponents. There are four different map options here.

The second is the “Checkpoint”, with the focus on defeating a certain number of enemies until time runs out. Like the first one, this one also provides the background music rhythm for the actions.

Gun Jam lacks a multiplayer mode. The style of the game would fit perfectly in a modality that can be played with several people, both online and locally.

Another felt absence is the localization in Portuguese. The entire interface, menus, subtitles and dubbing only have the option in English. This is something that could be fixed with a future update, but it’s still missing at this early stage.

gameplay

We have a mechanic that can be described as a fusion in two other famous games: DOOM and Hi-Fi Rush. While you’ll have a frantic FPS, which won’t always demand your attention to hit opponents, you must keep your commands within the rhythm of the music.

The combat system consists of choosing a song – which can be original to the game or customized. Depending on the song, a beats per minute (BPM) speed will be specified. If you’re fast, you’ll need to have a superior skill to shoot and deliver the other blows. With a slower pace, the movements will also be slower.

In all, there are three distinct characters, which vary according to the scenario. They have unique “Overdrive” abilities. The choice of map is also important due to the difficulty of the game. That’s because, in addition to a unique character, they also vary in relation to maximum health and music speed.

In this game, even though there are multiple weapons, you won’t worry about switching them. Each type of hit causes the character to automatically modify the weaponry. In other words, the priority is pace. Second comes the shot.

In general, we can say that this mechanic will please those who enjoy faster FPS games, but maybe it will create a certain difficulty for those who are used to titles that prioritize strategy and stealth, for example. It’s not a simple task to follow the beats, target enemies and move around the map to defend yourself.

We also felt a lack of variety not only in the number of scenarios, but also in the gameplay itself. After a while, the experience becomes more repetitive than fun.

Graphics and soundtrack

The visual part pleases in general. The graphics lack realism. They adopt a more animated style, with a look full of colors and brightness. Everything to give a very satisfactory experience.

But don’t think that the lack of a realistic appearance means that you don’t have a very powerful machine to run the title. The need to shoot at the right time demands that you have at least a satisfactory fps rate, as any stutter can make you lose the timing of the command.

The soundtrack is the highlight of the game. This is because music plays a fundamental role in Gun Jam. In any scenario, the sound is always well highlighted and requires maximum attention from the player to get the beats right.

The possibility of using personalization here also gives a greater identification with the player. But we understand that more options would be welcome to expand the possibilities here.

Final considerations

Gun Jam is a game with a good proposal, which combines different styles to deliver an unprecedented format. What leaves its success in check is the absences that we noticed – which makes this seem like an unfinished game.

There are two game modes that are fun, but have limitations on settings, characters and music. It still lacked a multiplayer mode to expand the horizons of the game, as well as localization in Portuguese (PT-BR).

At least, the graphics don’t disappoint and deliver high-quality, colorful textures for a satisfying visual experience. The soundtrack is also one of the great positive highlights, not because of the variety of songs – which is still lacking –, but because of the importance they have in the game, as well as the use of songs in gameplay.

history

Here we include the game modes, since there is no campaign. They are well laid out and fun, but limited. In addition to there being no multiplayer.

gameplay

Right mix between FPS and rhythmic action, but without variety of map and character options.

Graphics

The graphics are beautiful and full of colors, even without exploiting realism. The key frame rate around here.

Soundtrack

Soundtrack is the central part of the game, as the movements need to be in accordance with the rhythm of the songs.

Immersed

The game is attractive for its mechanics, but the lack of variety can make the experience repetitive and drive players away after a while.

Total score

Gun Jam delivers a good proposal, but it seems like an unfinished game.

It is worth it?

This game can only be found for PC, through the Steam platform, for the suggested price of R$ 59.99. We believe it’s a fair price to pay for it, but you have to keep in mind that the game’s repetitiveness may not bring enough longevity to play it for a long time.
